Rio Little Africa & Carnival Backstage

Afro-Brazilian Heritage, Samba & Carnival Culture | 8 Hours

Discover two of Rio de Janeiro’s most powerful cultural stories in one immersive full-day experience: the African heritage that shaped the city and the extraordinary creativity behind Brazilian Carnival.

Explore Little Africa, one of the most important territories of Afro-Brazilian memory in Rio, where history, resistance, spirituality, samba, and Black cultural identity remain deeply connected to the city today.

Then step behind the scenes of Rio Carnival for a colorful and interactive Carnival Backstage Experience, discovering how samba schools prepare for the world’s most famous celebration — from costumes and storytelling to craftsmanship, performance, and community traditions.

This is much more than a sightseeing tour. It is a journey through the people, places, traditions, and creative forces that helped shape Rio de Janeiro.

Tour Highlights

Little Africa — Afro-Brazilian Heritage

Walk through Rio’s historic Little Africa district with a licensed guide and uncover the stories of Africans and Afro-Brazilians whose culture, resistance, spirituality, music, and traditions profoundly shaped the identity of Rio de Janeiro.

The experience includes important open-air heritage sites along the Little Africa route, such as:

  • Valongo Wharf
  • Pedra do Sal
  • Largo da Prainha
  • Other historical and cultural landmarks connected to Rio’s African diaspora and Afro-Brazilian heritage

These open-air heritage sites are part of the route and are not dependent on museum opening hours.

Pretos Novos Memorial / IPN

Visit the Pretos Novos Research and Memorial Institute — IPN, one of Rio’s most important sites of African memory.

The IPN provides essential historical context about the transatlantic slave trade, the arrival of Africans in colonial Rio, and the preservation of Afro-Brazilian memory.

IPN Operating Days:
Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday mornings.

Important: The IPN closes at 1:00 PM on Saturdays and is not open from Saturday afternoon through Monday.

For tours booked during periods when the IPN is closed, the visit to the institute cannot be included, although the Little Africa heritage route and its open-air historical sites remain part of the experience.

MUHCAB — Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture

The tour may also include a visit to MUHCAB — Museu da História e da Cultura Afro-Brasileira, an important cultural institution dedicated to Afro-Brazilian history, memory, identity, and heritage.

MUHCAB Operating Days:
Tuesday through Sunday.

Closed on Mondays.

When the museum is operating during the scheduled tour, MUHCAB can be incorporated into the Little Africa cultural experience according to the day’s route and timing.

Important Visit Information

Some cultural institutions included in the Little Africa experience operate on specific days and hours.

Guests who are particularly interested in visiting IPN or MUHCAB should review the operating schedule before selecting their tour date.

  • IPN: Tuesday–Friday + Saturday morning only; closes at 1:00 PM on Saturdays; closed Saturday afternoon through Monday.
  • MUHCAB: Tuesday–Sunday; closed Mondays.
  • Open-air Little Africa heritage sites: accessible independently of museum opening schedules.

Why Take This Tour?

Few experiences connect Rio’s past and present as naturally as Little Africa and Carnival.

Little Africa reveals the African roots that helped shape samba, popular culture, spirituality, cuisine, and the identity of Rio de Janeiro.

The Carnival Backstage Experience then shows how many of those cultural traditions continue to evolve through one of Brazil’s most internationally recognized celebrations.

Together, they create a deeper understanding of Rio — not simply as a destination, but as a city shaped by African heritage, cultural resilience, creativity, and community.

Because the experience includes private transportation and a licensed guide, the day can unfold at a comfortable pace while allowing greater interaction, context, and flexibility.
