🏛️ MUHCAB — Afro-Brazilian History and Culture Museum

The Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture — MUHCAB is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing Afro-Brazilian heritage through exhibitions, art, historical documents, and narratives connected to the African presence in Rio de Janeiro.

It is an important cultural reference for understanding Black history, memory, identity, and contemporary Afro-Brazilian culture.

Closed on Mondays.

🕯️ Instituto Pretos Novos — Memory of Enslaved Africans in Rio

The Instituto de Pesquisa e Memória Pretos Novos — IPN is an archaeological and memorial site built over a former burial ground for newly arrived enslaved Africans.

It is one of Rio’s most moving and historically significant sites for understanding the human impact of the transatlantic slave trade and preserving the memory of people whose lives and stories were historically silenced.

Interior visits are subject to the institution’s official opening days and hours.

The IPN generally operates from Tuesday through Saturday morning, closing at 1:00 PM on Saturdays and remaining closed on Sundays and Mondays.

When the site is closed, your guide will provide historical interpretation and context from the surrounding area.

⚓ Valongo Wharf — UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Valongo Wharf was the principal arrival point for enslaved Africans brought to Rio de Janeiro during the transatlantic slave trade.

Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Valongo is one of the most important places of African Diaspora memory in the Americas.

Its archaeological remains create a powerful connection between Africa, Brazil, slavery, resistance, ancestry, and the cultural formation of Rio de Janeiro.

🧱 Armazém Docas André Rebouças — Black Excellence and Brazilian History

These historic port warehouses are named in honor of André Rebouças, a pioneering Afro-Brazilian engineer, abolitionist, intellectual, and advocate for social justice.

His life and work highlight Black excellence and the major contributions of Afro-Brazilians to Brazil’s social, intellectual, and economic development.

🥁 Pedra do Sal — Samba, Black Culture & Living Heritage

Known as one of the birthplaces of samba, Pedra do Sal remains one of the most emblematic landmarks of Black culture in Rio de Janeiro.

For generations, the area has been associated with samba, music, spirituality, community gatherings, African traditions, and Afro-Brazilian cultural resistance.

Today, Pedra do Sal continues to be a living cultural space rather than simply a historical monument.

Surrounded by colorful architecture, local restaurants, cultural spaces, and everyday neighborhood life, the square offers an opportunity to experience how history and contemporary Rio coexist within the same urban landscape.
